Tyler rose slowly with his hands extended in a placating gesture. While he understood her reaction, he had to stop Jen from taking an impulsive and dangerous action.
âYou canât go anywhere. Think about your father.â
âI am thinking of him.â Her volume rose to a near shout. âThis will devastate him. Iâve got to fix it.â
The room went silent, Jenâs cry grabbing attention like a bullhorn. Tyler didnât turn around to see for himself, but he had no doubt every eye was fastened on their drama. Jenâs cheeks reddened, and she let out a soft huff as she sank back into her chair.
âIâm sorry.â She refused to look at him as he resumed his seat beside her. âOf course I canât leave town with Dad in the hospital and both of us under threat.â
The hum of voices in the room picked up where it left off, but Tyler leaned toward her anyway to aid the confidentiality of their conversation.
âI get your frustration. Iâm sickened by all thatâs going on.â
âWe have to get to the bottom of it.â
âWe will.â
âI donât... I just...â She pressed two fingers against each side of her skull and rubbed. âI feel like my head will explode if one more stupid thing happens. Trashing our house is petty and malicious, but it doesnât compare with trying to kill us. Yet Iâm as upset about that as anything else.â
âI suspect the home invasion happened before the attempts on your lives began. Maybe he grabbed some paper to make notes for himself. The plotting behind these attacks is elaborate enough to require it.â
Jen stopped rubbing her temples, took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. âOkay, Iâm rational again. Whatâs our next move?â Her determined gaze captured his.
âWe should get crime scene techs into your family home to hunt for evidence left by the intruder. They wonât be able to tell if anythingâs missing, but they might be able to determine how he gained access, and they could look for evidence, such as fingerprints, or maybe he cut himself during the destruction.â
âYou donât have to convince me.â She offered a faint smile. âIâll call the police chief in Mount Airy. Heâs a family friend. Heâll make the arrangements.â
Tyler nodded. âDo that. Then letâs continue checking reports and following leads. Something has to spark a connection that will lead us to what is going on and who is behind these attacks.â
âI appreciate your confidence.â Jenâs frown held a hint of despair as she grabbed her phone and placed the call.
While she spoke with the Mount Airy police chief, Tyler gritted his teeth. If he werenât careful, anger would get the best of him, and heâd be making rash decisions. In their youth, he was always the cool head to Jenâs fierce and good-hearted reflex to plunge in and right wrongs. Since then, military training had reinforced in him the value of tactics. Still, at times he had to admit, Jenâs instinctive response in certain situations had been the perfect tactic.
