Tyler rose slowly with his hands extended in a placating gesture. While he understood her reaction, he had to stop Jen from taking an impulsive and dangerous action.

“You can’t go anywhere. Think about your father.”

“I am thinking of him.” Her volume rose to a near shout. “This will devastate him. I’ve got to fix it.”

The room went silent, Jen’s cry grabbing attention like a bullhorn. Tyler didn’t turn around to see for himself, but he had no doubt every eye was fastened on their drama. Jen’s cheeks reddened, and she let out a soft huff as she sank back into her chair.

“I’m sorry.” She refused to look at him as he resumed his seat beside her. “Of course I can’t leave town with Dad in the hospital and both of us under threat.”

The hum of voices in the room picked up where it left off, but Tyler leaned toward her anyway to aid the confidentiality of their conversation.

“I get your frustration. I’m sickened by all that’s going on.”

“We have to get to the bottom of it.”

“We will.”

“I don’t... I just...” She pressed two fingers against each side of her skull and rubbed. “I feel like my head will explode if one more stupid thing happens. Trashing our house is petty and malicious, but it doesn’t compare with trying to kill us. Yet I’m as upset about that as anything else.”

“I suspect the home invasion happened before the attempts on your lives began. Maybe he grabbed some paper to make notes for himself. The plotting behind these attacks is elaborate enough to require it.”

Jen stopped rubbing her temples, took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Okay, I’m rational again. What’s our next move?” Her determined gaze captured his.

“We should get crime scene techs into your family home to hunt for evidence left by the intruder. They won’t be able to tell if anything’s missing, but they might be able to determine how he gained access, and they could look for evidence, such as fingerprints, or maybe he cut himself during the destruction.”

“You don’t have to convince me.” She offered a faint smile. “I’ll call the police chief in Mount Airy. He’s a family friend. He’ll make the arrangements.”

Tyler nodded. “Do that. Then let’s continue checking reports and following leads. Something has to spark a connection that will lead us to what is going on and who is behind these attacks.”

“I appreciate your confidence.” Jen’s frown held a hint of despair as she grabbed her phone and placed the call.

While she spoke with the Mount Airy police chief, Tyler gritted his teeth. If he weren’t careful, anger would get the best of him, and he’d be making rash decisions. In their youth, he was always the cool head to Jen’s fierce and good-hearted reflex to plunge in and right wrongs. Since then, military training had reinforced in him the value of tactics. Still, at times he had to admit, Jen’s instinctive response in certain situations had been the perfect tactic.
